I was depressed. It was Monday yesterday and I had a long week ahead staring me down, with a lot of “fun” appointments in my agenda like a dental cleaning and one with my accountant to do my taxes. Not to mention the fact that opening day at Yankee’s Stadium was rained out. Looking at my schedule I had nothing in the plans this week to make me too excited. Also, a terrible situation that has befallen the residents of the building I live in, was confirmed. A tower is being built around the corner that is going to obstruct the view of all the apartments facing north. Though it doesn’t affect me directly, it affects many of my friends and neighbors. I was in the hall in the middle of a serious chat with my neighbor when the buzzer rang. The doorman announced that waiting for me was an arrangement of flowers, which I forgot I had ordered. About six months ago I placed a standing order for flower arrangements every other Monday from my favorite florist Miho. These flowers she does are the most gorgeous things. I have talked about them at every possible opportunity. I have sent them to everyone I know. I’ve been getting them for years and years and still they’re the most gorgeous things on earth. It’s an arrangement of roses that Miho does that are ombred from white to pink that go through every stage of mauve and lilac known to the eye of man. They smell amazing. As the flowers wilt and die they turn into inspiring shades of taupe. Even when they’re gone the vase that’s left behind is a plain cylinder, which I use for water when I paint sketches. It’s a perfect situation. More than once these arrangements have saved me. A few weeks ago my boyfriend had bunion surgery and as I was about to leave to pick him up and take him home, I realized I was empty handed. The buzzer rang again and there were the gorgeous flowers. And once I had invited people over for a knitting seminar and realized I hadn’t gotten enough snacks. As I was setting the table with the puny platters of sandwiches, the buzzer rang and there were the flowers to fill in the empty space left by the bowl of dip or the board of cheese that I had neglected to plan for. (People were still starving but at least the table didn’t look empty.) I conclude with advice. Get some flowers in your life. And if you’re like me and you’re forgetful, arrange with a florist for a delivery every other Monday. At least you know you’ll have two happy Mondays a month.
