I ate my first fresh, local peach of the season yesterday. I was hoping to be reminded of the fresh peach pie, peach crisp and peach ice cream that my mother used to make at this time of year and was totally disappointed. Thanks for perfectly articulating my experience. There truly was "no joy in the peach!" Love to you, Ruth

It's sad, isn't it? Peaches that don't peach and tomatoes that are more like spongy water bombs. Sigh. Have you tried the galette dough recipe in 'baking with julia'? It is fantastic! Leave the sugar out and you can use it for a savoury tart. I love it in the summer with fresh blueberries, and, during the cooler months, I use the no-sugar variant with creme fraiche, bacon, and onion. Heaven!

I would have to agree with you on the peaches. Just not very impressive this year. HOWEVER, look for some amazing apples at the farmers market. Had some Golden Crisp from Update NY and they were just amazing!
